Cellist Kian Soltani and pianist Aaron Pilsan bring us an instrumental transcription of Schubert’s song Im Abendrot (At Sunset). Full of subtle harmonic invention, Schubert’s setting has an introspective, hymnlike quality that echoes the declaration of religious faith expressed in the text – a poem by Karl Lappe – whose words also capture the fleeting beauty of sunset as its red glow bathes the earth. Kian Soltani plays the melody with legato lyricism, while Aaron Pilsan provides sensitive accompaniment – in perfect sympathy with one another throughout, these long-standing duo partners convey all the expressive power of this peaceful work.
