Cellist Kian Soltani and pianist Aaron Pilsan perform an arrangement of Schubert’s Ständchen (Serenade). This setting of a poem by Ludwig Rellstab, in which the narrator begs his lover to come to him, was originally published as part of the Schwanengesang (“Swansong”) collection in May 1829, a few months after Schubert’s death. Soltani captures the yearning tone of the original song, whose subtle key changes give the music a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty. Available to stream and download.
