Puccini and Verdi, the two grand masters of Italian opera, both gained their first musical experience in a church music environment. Puccini composed his Messa a 4 voci (“Messa di Gloria”) in 1880, at the age of 22. Verdi returned to sacred music at the end of his life, writing the Quattro pezzi sacri in the 1890s when he was over 80. On this album, out today, the Mass and the “Four sacred pieces” are performed by the Gaechinger Cantorey, the Dresdner Kammerchor and the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann.
