In an exceptional year of solitude, Kian Soltani pursued a long-held dream. He chose his favourite film scores, reimagined them for a supersized cello ensemble and recorded every note himself – from soaring solo melodies to infectious percussion sounds, mighty orchestral chords to whistling countermelodies. Cello Unlimited was created by the artist in multitrack recording sessions at Berlin’s Emil Berliner Studios and is released on Deutsche Grammophon today (15 October 2021).
Inviting listeners to embark on a voyage through movie music like no other, the album offers a uniquely personal take on unforgettable themes and epic musical thrills from films including Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Identity and The Da Vinci Code.
Soltani’s interpretation of “Chevaliers de Sangreal” from Hans Zimmer’s Da Vinci Code soundtrack has now also been brought to life by award-winning director Adam Csoka Keller. His breathtaking video creates surreal, mysterious simulations of worlds within worlds, filmed with an endoscopic camera. Soltani is depicted as the architect of this fictional landscape, actively reshaping it through his music, in a perfect synchronicity between image and sound.
Cello Unlimited speaks of a cellist unlimited, owner of consummate skills as performer, arranger and composer, and showcases the infinite possibilities of his instrument.
