Having signed to Deutsche Grammophon in April this year, Los Angeles-based Indonesian composer, pianist and producer Eunike Tanzil is now releasing her second digital single on the Yellow Label – a follow-up to Luna. Be My Home, a wistful, gently flowing piece for solo piano, comes out today, 26 July 2024. The track is accompanied by a video directed by Albert Chang, filmed in Los Angeles and portraying how Tanzil lives and works in the US city she currently calls home. The video will be released on Friday 2 August.
“Over the past eight years, I’ve moved from city to city,” says Eunike Tanzil, as she explains what led her to write this new piece. “And each time I wondered, ‘Is this going to be my new home?’ With every move, I had to make new friends and adjust to the unique rhythm of each place. The feelings of longing and homesickness inspired me to create this piece.”
Eunike Tanzil’s carefully-crafted musical narratives resonate deeply with audiences in both the cinema and the concert hall. Her music can be heard on the soundtracks of Asian Persuasion and I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and two of her orchestral works have been premiered in recent months – Celestial Waves (Bangkok, 2023) and Scenes from a Voyage (Indianapolis, 2024). A leading social media creative, she is known in particular for her “Hum me a Melody” series.
Notable for its stylistic variety, her work incorporates a range of influences – from Indonesian gamelan music in her string quartet Three Balinese Dances to the jazzy harmonies of Kapustin in Winter Matcha, for clarinet and piano. Whether writing for solo piano, chamber ensemble or orchestra; for social media, film, TV, dance, theatre or the concert hall, she uses her original voice and gift for storytelling not only to conjure new worlds for listeners, but also to inspire other young people to explore their own creativity.
