The choice of a Schumann cycle for Kubelík’s very first recording project in Berlin was perhaps surprising, since his music had scarcely featured in his concerts. However, he had known and loved the Schumann symphonies since his boyhood years when he studied them in arrangements for four hands. Moreover, though he had been impressed in his youth by the Berlin Philharmonic, he had only worked with the orchestra on a few occasions – their first appearance together was at the 1957 Salzburg Festival, followed by a couple of concerts in Berlin four years later. The cycle is now presented in a numbered and limited 3LP edition, remastered from the original analogue source.
