“Barenboim’s Beethoven is uncompromising and filled with hidden depths, contrapuntally stirring, while at the same time rhapsodizing about the distant beloved with the tenderness of the gentlest of breaths.” – Anne-Sophie Mutter
This release is the legacy statement from a great Beethovenian. Barenboim has been exploring Beethoven’s music for more than seven decades. Few musicians have engaged with the composer’s music as intensively and over such a long period as the pianist and conductor. For this recording, Barenboim reimmersed himself in the scores of these sonatas, at the same time building on all his past experiences. Barenboim sets out his mature vision of these the sonatas and the Diabelli Variations as a legacy for his contemporaries and future generations. The recordings were made live during this year’s lockdown in the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin.
“Beethoven’s music is always multidimensional: whenever it laughs, it laughs and cries at the same time.” – Daniel Barenboim
