Deutsche Grammophon and Google Arts & Culture present “Beethoven Beats”. This experiment celebrates Beethoven’s musical genius with a completely new way to discover his body of work. You are invited to tap out a rhythm which, through the application of machine learning, will be answered by the closest matching work from Beethoven’s extensive piano sonata collection.

The performances used here were recorded by the world-famous pianist Daniel Barenboim, and analysed using a machine learning algorithm for automatic polyphonic piano transcription.
