“To me Gymnopédie No. 1 feels like a piece of nature, like a tree or lake that simply “exists” without first having to ask how it came into being. Satie’s harmonies exude such a sense of familiarity that we don’t need analytical tools to understand the power of an imperturbable life flow. It was my aim to interpret the perpetual cycle of coming and going. The piece blossoms into a climax three times, wilts, and then rises again. In order to place the theme in a contemporary context, I transformed it intoa 4/4 rhythm, layered the melodies as emergences and added notes to new intervals.”– Dominik Eulberg
